Hi Neighbor!

My name is John. I’m an occupational therapist (OT) based in North Phoenix, Arizona.
I offer individuals/families in need my knowledge and skills for FREE in these areas:

- Physical Rehabilitation: I offer direct care and expertise at your home or in your place/s of work.

- Sports Medicine/Injury Prevention: I’m a former endurance athlete and current tennis player with extensive professional (and personal) experiences in injury prevention and rehabilitation.

~~~~~~
In the same spirit, I offer my knowledge and skills as a consultant/educator to local charitable organizations and mission aligned institutions in those areas and these:
- Health Promotion/Productive Aging: Each and every one of us has an opportunity to make the “latter” years (50+) the most joyful years… and, let’s be honest, we aren’t getting any younger!
- Mental Health/Wellness: I offer strengths based assessments of wellness, and action plans with quality of life and civic/community responsibility at the core.
~~~~~~

These plans are inspired by the philosophy of occupational therapy (Meyer), flow (Csikszentmihalyi) pragmatism (Rorty), and the positive psychology movement.

Let’s move away from defining ourselves by what ails us or what “diagnoses” we carry (both physical and mental), and instead look inside to bring greater lived emphasis on the many good things about ourselves we so often can be distracted from.

Who is this guy? (good question)

I’m a national board certified, state licensed, professional occupational therapist with seven years of experience who wishes to build a pro-bono practice in order to provide my knowledge and skills to area neighbors, in order to:

1. Give to those in need who lack access to essential skilled therapy services according to this simple formula: Financial Need/Lack of Access + Genuine Medical Necessity.

2. Offer my knowledge and insights to maximize health literacy in communities according to need.

3. Learn through firsthand effort how to build a non-profit foundation which will serve this mission, which might offer a practicable and sustainable model of direct access care that addresses the current healthcare crisis, and by its example inspire wider reforms and changes across our country’s beleaguered healthcare model. In short, essential medical and allied health services should never veer from what is medically necessary, equitable, provider driven, client-centered, transparent, sustainable, creative, and flexible in its community based, individual provider model.

My professional skills are drawn from positions in level 1 trauma hospitals, inpatient/acute rehabilitation facilities (IRF/ARF), skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), outpatient clinics (OP), assisted living (ALF), and memory care facilities. My clinical rotations were at an acute psychiatric hospital and a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH).

For those concerned about making money: I believe it is possible to take the skills of a justly motivated professional and offer them honestly to others in a good-faith partnership that democratizes health care delivery, scales value in direct proportion to performance (both objective and perceived), and - following even modest success - offers peers and the wider society encouragement to consider what might be possible when organic, good-faith partnerships between professionals and individuals/families eclipse the healthcare industry in costs and measurable outcomes.

I invite anyone in the North Phoenix area who would like more information about direct care services I offer (traditional, individualized occupational therapy) to contact me at jbrotr@gmail.com .

For anyone else - outside a reasonable driving area or who are out of state - I can help you via Telehealth in the areas of health promotion, medical equipment recommendations/home modifications, productive aging, education, insights, etc. Please feel free to contact me at jbrotr@gmail.com at your leisure.

I look forward to helping you with your rehab related goals.

General Legal Disclaimers

Credentials and Verification

John Read, MSOT, OTR/L, is certified through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT®) and licensed to practice in the State of Arizona through the Arizona Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners.

The official NBCOT® Registered OTR® badge displayed on this page confirms current certification status and commitment to professional excellence. It may be verified at any time and free of charge through NBCOT’s public registry. State licensure verification is similarly free and available to the public at the Arizona Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners’ website.

Privacy and Confidentiality:
I make every reasonable effort to protect the privacy of every client in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and relevant state privacy laws. Client information is treated with respect and confidentiality, and no personal data is shared without explicit consent, except as required by law.

Pro‑Bono Services Disclaimer:
Because these services are provided voluntarily and at no cost, they are not subject to the same administrative or procedural standards as occupational therapy services rendered for payment or reimbursed through public or private insurance. While I maintain the same ethical and professional standards of care, clients understand that pro‑bono services can differ in scope, documentation, and oversight from traditional fee‑for‑service or insurance‑based models. The key benefit for myself and for clients in this “free” model is that I - as the provider - enjoy greater liberties to provide more patient centered, innovative, holistic treatment approaches and techniques while maintaining the same moral and ethical duties and obligations as codified in regulatory frameworks typical of conventional, professional practice, and which operate under strict rules and regulations by both state and federal legislative bodies, and whose claims and issues are adjudicated by the relevant state and national organizations that grant and oversee my licensure and certification.

Services for Adults (age 18 and older):
Adults are welcome to contact me directly by email at jbrotr@gmail.com to discuss potential services. Please note, a General Liability Waiver and Informed Consent Form must be read, understood, and signed by both the client and myself before any direct care services will be provided.

Services for Youth (under age 18):
Any minors interested in coaching or mentorship services must have a parent/legal guardian initiate contact with me in order to discuss compliance considerations for legal and ethical practice, support for informed consent, and protection for both the minor client and myself under Arizona state law and federal regulations. As regards coaching, fitness training, or other services offered outside the scope of conventional, direct care occupational therapy practice, legal and ethical considerations associated with risks and liabilities still apply and will be addressed between the provider, the parent/legal guardian, and the youth client prior to the start of any/all service/s.

These policies and the seriousness with which I take their associated legal and ethical implications exist to preserve the accessibility and integrity of my community services and my professional reputation/credentials.
I welcome and encourage everyone to raise any and all questions/concerns directly with me at any time.
